A sign refers to a new Microsoft Research technology to be unveiled at the Professional Developers Conference later this week.
LOS ANGELES -- Even as Microsoft focuses on its new Windows Azure cloud computing platform today, there are plenty of indications about what's coming up later in the week here at the company's Professional Developers Conference. On the show floor, a section devoted to Windows 7 is dark, with a sign (pictured below) promising "New Technology to be Revealed Soon." Meanwhile, in a back corner of the convention hall, an empty Microsoft Research booth refers to an unveiling on Wednesday.
Steven Sinofsky, the Windows engineering chief, is slated to unveil Windows 7 at the conference tomorrow morning. I saw him near one of the press briefing rooms and tried to pry details out of him, to no avail. Rick Rashid, the Microsoft Research chief, is due to speak at the conference Wednesday morning, so presumably the mystery MSR booth has something to do with that.
Not to be left out, it also continues to look as if the next version of Microsoft Office could make an appearance at the show, as previously reported by Ina Fried of CNet News.com. Stay tuned for more details on all of this as the week unfolds.
