Monday marked 25 years since the unveiling of Windows 1.0 -- the official beginning of the PC operating system that has come to define Microsoft's business. However, as Wired and Gizmodo note, calling it a birthday might be a bit of a stretch.
Foreshadowing long development cycles to come, the company didn't release Windows 1.0 for another two years after the announcement. And true to form, the franchise didn't really start to gain traction until the release of Windows 3.0 in May 1990.
At any rate, here are two videos to mark the occasion, whatever your opinion of the significance. In this one, presumably an internal Microsoft spoof, now-CEO Steve Ballmer makes an infomercial-style sales pitch for Windows 1.0. (Via Patrick Phelps at GearLive.)
And in this one, Duncan at MOB3 uses virtualization software to give a guided tour of Windows versions, from 1.0 to Vista.
