Microsoft is attempting to get Windows 7 on the market in time for the 2009 holiday season, reports Ina Fried of CNet News.com, based on clues gleaned from a session at Microsoft's Windows Hardware Engineering Conference. The company has been publicly mum on the topic, except to say that it's shooting for a release about three years after Windows Vista's general availability, which would literally translate into January 2010.
Another sign that the global economic meltdown is affecting the personal-computer industry: Lenovo reported a decline in quarterly profits, blaming slumping PC sales. See details in this Wall Street Journal report. Microsoft, whose Windows business depends heavily on PC sales, recently reduced its financial forecasts for its current fiscal year.
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is making lots of news on his latest trip, and not just with his Yahoo comments. Two reports from overseas: Steve Ballmer confirms existence of Windows Mobile 6.5; and Microsoft 'interested' in open-source browser.
Microsoft is seeking to supplant Google as the provider of search and advertising on Verizon Wireless phones, the WSJ reports. The deal would be a coup for the Redmond company as it tries to chip away at Google's dominance in the broader search business.
Microsoft has integrated integrated its Live Search Maps and PhotoSynth services. LiveSide.net has details.
Patch Tuesday, Microsoft's monthly security update, will be unusually light this time around.
