The "Dear John" letters of past wars are getting a very modern twist on this Veterans Day. The Department of Defense today is introducing TroopTube, a new site that allows military members and their families to share videos with each other.
Powering the new site is Seattle-based Delve Networks, which worked with an online marketing agency to build TroopTube.
Alex Castro, who leads Delve, described the new site as a YouTube-like video site for the four million or so U.S. military members.
Currently, viewers of the site can see a message from General David Petraeus and a video of two wives passing on good wishes to soldiers in the U.S. Army's 3rd Brigade. (UPDATE: More videos are available to military members and their families as Castro points out in the comments).
YouTube already boasts plenty of military content. (A recent search of the word "military" produced 449,000 results.) But content in YouTube is culled from various sources and ranges from clips of Dwight D. Eisenhower to war time bloopers. The Department of Defense also started blocking access to YouTube, MySpace and other social media sites last year due to security concerns.
TroopTube is a member's only site for the military and their families.
