Seattle's Urbanspoon, whose online restaurant locator has quickly become one of the most popular iPhone applications, gets a huge plug in Apple's latest ad campaign.
The ad shows Urbanspoon's slot-machine-style restaurant locator in action, though unfortunately featuring San Francisco restaurants. (Come on, Apple, people eat well in Seattle, too.)
"You know that age-old dilemma, where should we eat tonight?" the ad says. "With the Urbanspoon app from the the app store, you can find restaurants nearby."
You can't buy advertising that good. Oh yeah, this is advertising, though I am sure Apple footed the bill.
At last count back in July, more than 300,000 iPhone users had downloaded the Urbanspoon app. I have an e-mail into the Urbanspoon folks to get an updated figure and to get their reaction on the ad.
UPDATE: Urbanspoon's Ethan Lowry tells me that they now have about1 million downloads on the iPhone and 30 million "shakes." He also described the ad process with Apple.
"They've been great to us ever since Urbanspoon on the iPhone took off, but Apple is still a very tight-lipped place," he notes. "We started talking about the ad a few weeks ago, but they couldn't confirm or deny when or if it would go live."
UPDATE: Here's the new ad, via Randall M. Rueff.
