Microsoft acknowledged today that it has hired a key Yahoo search technology executive, Sean Suchter, to work on its Live Search engine, confirming reports by Valleywag and AllThingsD. But the Redmond company still has a key position to fill in its online division, and it has been taking quite a while to fill it.
When Microsoft Platforms & Services Division chief Kevin Johnson announced his departure in July, the company rearranged its executive ranks and said it would create a "new senior lead position" in the Online Services Business, conducting a search spanning external and internal candidates. That job has yet to be filled. Microsoft says the search is still ongoing, and there's not a set timeline for filling the position.
But could it be another former Yahoo executive? AllThingsD's Kara Swisher speculates that Microsoft is courting Qi Lu, former executive vice president of engineering for Yahoo's Search and Advertising Technology Group.
Meanwhile, Suchter is slated to start work at Microsoft Dec. 22. The company says he will be general manager of its Silicon Valley Search Technology Center. As Valleywag observed yesterday, maybe Microsoft "has gotten the heart of Yahoo's search technology without the fuss of actually buying it."
