Microsoft announced today that it's dropping the price of its flash-based Zune music players as it heads into the holiday shopping season. The most eye-catching price is $99.99 for the 4GB Zune player -- a $30 decrease from the previous level.
It's the latest move in Microsoft's long struggle against the iPod. But given the continued popularity of Apple's lineup, how many people will notice? See the chart above to get a sense for how the product lines compare. Apple doesn't offer a 4GB iPod Nano, but the 8GB iPod Nano sells for $149, compared with the new price of $139.99 for the 8GB Zune.
Microsoft also dropped the price of some Zune accessories. See the Zune Insider blog for more details.
Separately, Microsoft has released a Zune software update, with new games. And the company's new Zune commercials also debuted.
