Some employees at Celebrate Express will be transferred to Wisconsin and others will lose their jobs as part of a restructuring that was announced today at the online retailer of costumes and party supplies. The Kirkland company also will be shutting down a distribution center in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The move comes five months after Celebrate Express was purchased by Liberty Media Corp. for $31 million. As part of that deal, Celebrate Express was merged with Halloween costume retailer BuySeasons.
The Kirkland office will remain open, though BuySeasons Chief Executive Jalem Getz said it will be "slightly smaller." He declined to say how many people would be laid off or transferred.
BuySeasons and CelebrateExpress employ about 325 full time workers, with staffing ramping up around Halloween to more than 1,000 workers. The Greensboro distribution center will close as part of the plan, with that work shifting to the company's 365,000 square foot distribution center near Milwaukee.
Getz said that some job functions may be moved to Kirkland from Wisconsin, where BuySeasons is based. He declined to elaborate on those jobs, saying that as a privately-held company he would rather not have competitors know what they are doing.
The reductions in staff and closure of the distribution center are not tied to the general economy, with Getz saying they were made as part of a plan to make the company more efficient following the merger.
For fiscal year 2008, Celebrate Express had net sales of $77.8 million.
