Is Amazon creeping ahead of eBay?
The latest batch of numbers from internet research firm Nielsen Online reveals an interesting data point. In Nov. 2008, Amazon pulled ahead of eBay in terms of unique monthly visitors -- the first time that's happened since Dec. 2007.
Amazon had 57.6 million unique visitors compared to 55.4 million for eBay. It's an interesting development in the rivalry between the longtime online competitors -- and one worth watching.
The last time Amazon edged out eBay in Dec. 2007, it did so by a whisker: 59.6 million versus 59.3 million unique visitors, a difference of about 250,000, according to Nielsen.
In November, Amazon held a wider margin of 2.2 million unique visitors.
In another metric Nielsen tracks, the Amazon parent company (which includes non-Amazon-branded websites) edged out the eBay parent company, with 65.5 million unique monthly visitors compared to eBay's 65.3 million.
StreetInsider.com calls it a "significant gain" for Amazon over eBay and says hopefully for eBay shareholders it's "not a sign of sellers and buyers taking their merchandise and dollars over to Amazon.com."
