Seattle's Melodeo has introduced a new way for musicians and labels to market their music on the iPhone, iPod Touch, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile devices, with the company saying that it plans to offer a number of mobile applications for musicians early next year. "This is a chance for artists and labels to break out of the music industry's self-imposed straitjacket of the single or album unit," said Melodeo VP Dave Dederer, who has connections in the music biz from his days in the rock band Presidents of the United States of America.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Clearwire's new WiMax offering faces a "steep climb" in part because the Kirkland mobile broadband provider will need $3 billion to $5 billion to complete the network. The company just finished its merger with Sprint's wireless unit and raised $3.2 billion from Google, Intel and others.
Following its new retail locations in LA and San Francisco, Seattle-based Earth Class Mail has set up a new facility in Manhattan (on Park Avenue) where customers can manage their postal mail.
The Life Sciences Discovery Fund said it will award four grants totaling $18 million to Lawrence Corey of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center; Thomas Rea of the Seattle & King County Department of Public Health; John Roll of Washington State University; and Patrick Stayton of the University of Washington. The grants will go to programs in vaccine development, cardiac resuscitation technology and other areas.

Headline of the day comes via Reader's Digest: "The Obama Administration Listens to Count Me In." Really? Well, it is not what it seems. Turns out there are two Count Me In's, the Bellevue online registration company that is being accused of ripping off funds from youth sports agencies and the non-profit Count Me In group that attempts to elevate the entrepreneurial pursuits of women. In this case, the headline refers to the latter.
