There was lots of buzz over the weekend about the new line of "softwear" retro shirts to be offered by Microsoft in selected retail stores. The shirts are an extension of Microsoft's work with ad agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky, created in partnership with rapper Common.
But the company immediately lost out on some of the brand-building value. Despite the unveiling, it turns out the shirts won't actually be available in stores for another week. Some people who visited the Softwear by Microsoft site didn't see the Dec. 15 release date, couldn't figure out where or how to buy the shirts, and ultimately gave up trying.
"Microsoft has a new t-shirt line 'softwear' " one Twitter user wrote to a friend. "tried to buy 1 for you ... but I couldn't figure out how! Oh well!"
An advance unveiling of a big Windows release is one thing, but would it have been so hard to wait to announce the shirts until they were actually available for people to buy?
