New e-book reader takes on Kindle |

Amazon.com paved the way for electronic book readers with its Kindle device. But new players are getting in on the action. The latest is eSlick, an e-book reader from a company called Foxit Software. The eSlick has a built -MP3 player, and gives an introductory price of $229 -- more than $100 less than Kindle's $359 price tag.
Early takes on the eSlick are mixed. Wired in a review today says the eSlick has a Kindle-like screen and a "monster battery life," but says it's lacking the Kindle's wireless feature and direct connection to Amazon's online store. PC World also weighs in on the pros and cons of eSlick.
One advantage the eSlick may have over Kindle, aside from cost, is speed to market. The eSlick website says it's expected to ship in 5 to 7 weeks (preorders "coming soon.") Amazon, which ran out of Kindles earlier this holiday season, gives a target of 11 to 13 weeks.
The eSlick joins the ranks of other Kindle competitors, including Sony's e-book reader and the Stanza, the electronic book reader application for the iPhone.
