Nintendo's Wii ran away with the U.S. video-game console market in November, selling more than 2 million units and setting itself apart as the top choice among holiday shoppers despite aggressive price cuts by Microsoft's Xbox 360.
Numbers just released by the NPD Group market research firm show the Nintendo Wii selling 2.04 million units in the U.S. for the month. Its Nintendo DS handheld gaming system also did well, with 1.57 million units sold. Microsoft's Xbox 360 sold 836,000 units, while Sony's PlayStation 3 came in at 378,000 units, according to the NPD data.
It was, by far, the Wii's biggest month on record, a review of past NPD data shows. Its previous high-water mark for U.S. sales was 1.35 million units in December 2007. December is typically the largest month of the year for console sales.
Overall, the video-game industry appeared to remain resilient to the economic turmoil. Industry revenues from video-game hardware, software and accessories were $2.91 billion for the month, a 10 percent increase over the same month last year.
The Xbox 360 ranges in price from $199.99 to $399.99, depending on storage capacity and other options. The PlayStation 3 sells for $399.99 and $499.99. The Wii goes for $249.
