It's been about a year since Amazon.com launched its MP3 digital music store. And the report cards are starting to roll in.
AllThingsD's MediaMemo weighs in today, saying Amazon MP3 has "failed miserably" as an iTunes killer.
Amazon has been predictably tight-lipped about its MP3 business since launching it in Sept. 2007. But MediaMemo take a stab at coming up with some figures, estimating that Amazon MP3 has 5 to 10 percent of the digital music market, compared to a whopping 70-plus percent for Apple.
That trends with other recent estimates, which put Amazon's MP3 share at 8 percent.
Amazon's entry into the digital music market -- selling DRM-free music tracks -- was meant to pose a direct threat to iTunes and give the major music labels more leverage in their dealings with Apple.
So far, it hasn't worked out that way. Consumers continue to be drawn to iTunes' easy user interface and don't seem hung up on the anti-copy issues.
But Amazon is plowing ahead, inking MP3 deals this fall with MySpace and Google's cell phone. It will be interesting to see how the business fares in 2009.
