Add WhitePages.com to the list of Seattle area Internet companies cutting staff. The online people and business directory, which has conducted several small layoffs in the past two years, laid off seven employees last month. That equates to about five percent of the 135 person staff.
"While it was a difficult decision to make, I believe taking these measures are in the best interest of the company, as it ensures that we’re investing our resources where we think they make most economic sense," said founder Alex Algard via e-mail.
While WhitePages is cutting back, Algard notes that December is shaping up to be the company's largest revenue month on record. He said the cutbacks were needed because the customer support and administration groups were too big relative to the company's overall size.
WhitePages posted $62 million revenue last year, with a goal of reaching $200 million in sales in the next three years.
Employees who are losing their jobs are staying on with the company through December 31. They also are receiving severance packages.
Algard also founded CarDomain.com, an online site for auto enthusiasts which cut half of its staff last month.
