Amazon's international business: Where will it expand next? |

The continuing growth of Amazon's international business has me wondering where the company will be expanding next.
For the fourth quarter of 2008, the company's international segment sales -- generated by Amazon's U.K., German, Japanese, French and Chinese sites -- jumped 19 percent to $3.07 billion from the same quarter a year ago (it would have been 31 percent if unfavorable changes in foreign exchange rates were excluded, according to Amazon).
A few weeks ago, I ran across some chatter on Twitter that appeared to indicate Jeff Bezos was in India. Amazon never responded to my questions on that, but it got me thinking about India or other places where Amazon might launch new country-specific sites.
Amazon currently has two software development centers in India, which could explain a Bezos visit there. But India is also clearly a large potential market for ecommerce. In 2004, Amazon plunged into China -- another huge overseas market -- by acquiring Chinese web retailer Joyo.
In Q4 2008, Amazon's North America segment sales from its U.S. and Canada sites grew 18 percent year over year -- a bit slower pace than international. North America segment sales totaled $3.63 billion in fourth quarter 2008.
