Mac sales rise, defying economy |

Mac shipments rose nearly 9 percent in the fourth quarter, according to data released by Apple today -- proving less vulnerable, so far, to the global economic problems that have hit the Windows PC market.
The news wasn't as good for Apple on another front, with reports that the SEC has opened an inquiry into the companys disclosure of Steve Jobs' health problems. And Apple's forecast for its next earnings report came in lower than analysts were expecting. But the company's record results beat Wall Street's expectations for the quarter ended Dec. 27.
The growth in Mac shipments, while less than in quarters past, was notable given the state of the broader personal computer market. Research firms IDC and Gartner recently released data showing flat or slightly negative growth in worldwide PC shipments for the fourth quarter, typically the biggest of the year for the market. See the accompanying charts for a sense of the trends.
Microsoft reports earnings Thursday afternoon. Check back for the Redmond company's results as they're available.
