Fans of the hit TV show "Lost" have a new iPhone application to play with, thanks to the efforts of Seattle attorney and iPhone app developer Michael Schneider.
The latest 99 cent offering -- dubbed "I Love Lost" and entered into the app store last night -- is an online contest and community where fans can read about the show, answer trivia and participate in a contest. The contest is pretty unique, forcing participants to enter a special code every 108 minutes or they are eliminated. (The 108 minutes is a reference to the countdown clock in the series' second season.)
"Players are going to have to wake up a couple time(s) every night to enter the code if they want to stay in the game. It should be interesting to watch," explains Schneider, who says the last person standing gets $1,000. The contest starts January 28.
Schneider said the application is a bit of a departure from his others, which he described as more "utilitarian." But he thinks people are looking for short bursts of entertainment on the iPhone.
"This app is a bit of an experiment. I have a tendency to think that if an app doesn't solve a real problem for people it is not that interesting, but based on the sales trends on the store, the market seems to favor apps that provide five or ten minutes of quality entertainment," said Schneider. "I am hoping people will find the contest and community aspects of the app a fun way to spend some time."
While there are iPhone apps for games shows such as "Deal or No Deal" and "Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader," Schneider said he believe "I Love Lost" is the the first community-based, unofficial fan app for a TV show.
And why "Lost?" The attorney at Wilson Sonsini says: "I am excited about the new season and am a big fan of the show."
