Perhaps this is a sign of the times. A Bellevue company by the name of Learn and Save claims to have launched the first consumer Web application of the new year, a service that combines online video tutorials with coupons to help people save money.
Right now, the featured tutorial on the site -- conducted by a Seattle employee of REI -- is a 4:51 video on how to use a GPS. The site launches with 15,000 tutorials, broken into categories such as education, food and drink, cars and legal.
“Our vision is to provide tutorials on a wide range of topics where each tutorial is matched to savings opportunities that also match the subject and content of the tutorial,” said Learn and Save Chief Executive Charlie Gillette in a statement. Gillette said the site is emerging at the right time. As the economy worsens, he says "people are looking for ways to save money."
Learn and Save sounds a bit like eHow, which boasts 500,000 videos and articles on a myriad of topics. Owned by Demand Media, eHow attracts more than 26 million visitors per month, according to its Web site.
Learn and Save is a subsidiary of Knowledge Anywhere, an 11-year-old Bellevue online education company. Its development team is led by Bill Allocca, who had previously spent a decade in various roles at Amazon.com.
