Yahoo's CEO pick: Microsoft knows who it's dealing with |

Yahoo has chosen former Autodesk CEO Carol Bartz as its new chief executive, ending its search for Jerry Yang's replacement, according to a Wall Street Journal report this morning. Autodesk, known for its computer-assisted design software, happens to be a longtime Microsoft partner, so the choice may stir new speculation about a possible Yahoo-Microsoft search deal.
At the very least, the fact that Yahoo has settled on a new chief executive could put the company in a position to talk with Microsoft about the possibility. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has made it clear that he's no longer interested in acquiring all of Yahoo, but the Redmond company is still interested in combining its search assets with Yahoo to become a more credible rival to Google.
Of course, the reported choice of Bartz means that the job won't go to a tech executive with Seattle roots. Names previously floated for the job included Arun Sarin, the former Infospace CEO; and John Chapple, the Seattle venture capitalist and Yahoo board member.
