Amazon extends grocery delivery service to Seattle's Ballard |
Follow the ups and downs of a new Seattle startup in a series of behind-the-scenes posts by its founders.
Seattle's Ballard neighborhood lost out in a recent online vote to be the next grocery delivery area for Amazon Fresh (Ravenna won the contest). But Amazon is extending the service to Ballard anyway. Residents of Ballard's 98117 and 98107 zip codes alerting them that Amazon Fresh is now delivering to their area.
The news was welcomed by neighborhood blog My Ballard, which kept close tabs on the earlier Amazon Fresh online vote. The blog quoted Amazon's Vincent Chu as saying that Ballard residents don't need an Amazon Prime membership to place orders, but they will incur a $5 delivery charge for orders under $75. First orders can be placed Tuesday.
It was not immediately clear if Magnolia's 98199, the other neighborhood in the online contest, will also get Amazon Fresh.
Amazon Fresh is for now limited to the Puget Sound region. Amazon has taken a cautious approach to building the grocery service, perhaps mindful of its earlier investments in HomeGrocer.com (later Webvan) and Kozmo, two dot-com era delivery firms that went out of business.
