The Kindle 2 is only a few days old. But Amazon.com is already making changes to the device. In response to criticism from the Authors Guild and others, Amazon.com issued a statement this afternoon saying it would now allow authors and publishers to decide whether to utilize the text-to-speech function on select book titles.
"We have already begun to work on the technical changes required to give authors and publishers that choice," the company said. "With this new level of control, publishers and authors will be able to decide for themselves whether it is in their commercial interests to leave text-to-speech enabled. We believe many will decide that it is."
Amazon.com also said the technology -- which utilizes a computerized voice to read books aloud -- is legal.
"Kindle 2's experimental text-to-speech feature is legal: no copy is made, no derivative work is created, and no performance is being given," the company wrote.
