Wall Street analysts will be listening intently -- but apparently not expecting a lot of new information -- when Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and finance chief Chris Liddell deliver a "strategic update" Tuesday morning in New York. Still, there will be plenty to discuss.
Question No. 1: How is the economy affecting Microsoft's business now? Question No. 2: Did the company go far enough when it announced layoffs and other cutbacks last month?
Here's what Goldman Sachs analyst Sarah Friar wrote in a note to clients this morning:
"We would expect key discussions to address the impact of a weak macro environment, Windows 7 (both timing and pricing), the company's cost cutting actions, the rise of netbooks and the impact to ASPs [average selling prices], and a potential search transaction with Yahoo!. We are not expecting a lot of new info beyond what was given on the company's earnings call a few weeks back, in particular with no guidance in place we would expect little update on revenue or margin momentum."
The event starts at 5 a.m. Pacific time Tuesday. A webcast is available on this Microsoft site. Check back for coverage tomorrow.
