Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos -- and his trademark guffaw -- dropped by The Daily Show on Comedy Central Monday night. Bezos is on a media tour promoting Amazon's new electronic book reader Kindle 2, and he did his best to stick to the marketing script, though host Jon Stewart kept things off-balance by repeatedly poking fun at Amazon.
"Why is it that if I want a delivery in three days, it's $1.50, but if I want it delivered in 2 days, it's $85?" Stewart demanded to know. When Bezos explained that Stewart could get free two-day shipping if he joined Amazon Prime for $79 a year, Stewart exclaimed,"What? Free shipping for only $79 a year? That's not free!"
When Bezos detailed how the Kindle can download a book wirelessly in 60 seconds, Stewart asked, "This does not attach directly to my brain?" To which Bezos responded, "We're working on that."
Stewart asked if Kindle 2's "Text to Speech" feature that reads e-books aloud is a "computerized freaky voice." Bezos admitted, "It's a little freaky."
Bezos later told Stewart that one advantage of Kindle is you can read it with one hand, which caused Stewart to raise an eyebrow. "I have no idea what you're thinking," Bezos laughed.
When told of the Kindle 2's $359 price tag, Stewart said, "That's gotta come down" and mockingly slid the Kindle back across the table to Bezos. Looks like the Amazon CEO has a bit more selling to do.
