Microsoft has quietly finished and begun using the gigantic parking garage beneath the new Entertainment & Devices complex under construction in Redmond. Four stories deep, with room for a few thousand cars, it's one of the largest underground garages in the Western Hemisphere -- a fact that generated lots of media coverage when work began a couple years ago.
The garage and campus were planned in the midst of Microsoft's employment boom. Times have changed, and the company is now cutting back. Still, it can be hard to find parking in many areas of campus, and Microsoft plans to move some employees from outlying locations to the new E&D campus.
For now, the garage is getting limited use. The four buildings in the complex aren't yet occupied. But as I was driving through Microsoft earlier this week, I noticed that the garage was open, so I went down the ramp and drove around to take some pictures. The enormity of the place wasn't easy to capture, but click for larger images and note how far away those cars are in the distance.
