Nintendo, Microsoft see console sales climb as new year begins |
Follow the ups and downs of a new Seattle startup in a series of behind-the-scenes posts by its founders.
Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360 both experienced year-over-year increases in U.S. unit sales in January, according to the latest monthly data released today by the NPD Group market research firm. Sony's PlayStation 3 didn't fare as well, seeing its console sales decline compared with the same month last year.
Xbox 360 sales volume climbed 33 percent, to 309,000 consoles, according to the NPD numbers. Wii sales more than doubled, to 679,000. Sales of the PlayStation 3 fell about 25 percent compared with last January, to 203,000.
Those trends roughly follow the worldwide pattern seen by each console in the fourth quarter of last year.
The video game industry has so far been a bright spot in the gloomy economy. Overall sales of video-game hardware, software and accessories for January in the U.S. were $1.33 billion, an increase of 13 percent over the same month last year.
