Is there some secret Sunnyvale-to-Redmond pipeline we didn't know about? Microsoft has hired another Yahoo search executive, Larry Heck, according to a Bloomberg News report this evening. Heck was previously Yahoo's vice president of search and marketing sciences, and he gives Microsoft another search veteran to help its effort to challenge Google.
Heck is the third former Yahoo search executive to join Microsoft in recent months, but he's first since Carol Bartz took over as Yahoo CEO. The hiring of Bartz was widely seen as a possible prelude to a Yahoo-Microsoft search agreement, but you have to wonder what the poaching of Heck says about the chances of such a partnership happening in the short term.
Doesn't seem like the type of move you make against a company you're about to strike a deal with.
Bloomberg's Dina Bass reports that Heck will start in a few weeks, reporting to search engineering chief Satya Nadella. Microsoft's previous hires included Qi Lu, a former top Yahoo search and marketing executive who is now president of its Online Services Business. Before that the company added Sean Suchter, another Yahoo search exec.
Update: Confirmation from Microsoft: "We are happy to confirm that Larry Heck has accepted a job at Microsoft. He will be working for Satya Nadella, SVP, Research and Development, Online Services Division, and he will start in a few weeks time. We look forward to welcoming him to the team."
