Announcing the new Google Sync mobile service today, the search giant didn't exactly trumpet the fact that it uses patented ActiveSync technology licensed from archrival Microsoft. In fact, Google didn't even mention it. Fortunately, Microsoft wasn't shy about patting itself on the back.
"Google’s licensing of these Microsoft patents relating to the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync protocol is a clear acknowledgment of the innovation taking place at Microsoft," said Horacio Gutierrez, a Microsoft deputy general counsel, in a statement released by the company after Google's announcement.
Google is the latest in a series of Microsoft competitors to license the technology, following Apple, Nokia, Palm, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson. The new Google Sync service lets iPhone and Windows Mobile synchronize their Gmail Contacts and Google Calendar events with their phones wirelessly. Microsoft last week confirmed plans for its own mobile sync service, My Phone.
