Less than a year after raising $18 million from OVP Venture Partners and others, TZero Technologies is reportedly shutting down, according to EE Times.
TZero's demise marks the second closure of an OVP-backed fabless semiconductor company in the past four months. In November, Beaverton, Oregon-based Ambric, which had raised $42 million from OVP, comVentures and others, pulled the plug.
In addition to OVP, the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based maker wireless video products received funding from August Capital, Lightspeed Venture Partners, U.S. Venture Partners and VentureTech Alliance. Founded in 2003, TZero's ultra wideband chips are used in HD video audio/video components.
VentureBeat's Dean Takahashi has a good overview of the problems encountered in the ultra wideband (UWB) industry.
"UWB started with much fanfare as a way to get rid of wires between consumer devices and an easy way to move high-definition video around the home," writes Takahashi. "But the promised high-speed data transfer wasn’t as fast as expected."
Bill Funcannon of OVP sits on the TZero board.
