After running the Windows 7 Beta through its paces, researchers at Pacific Crest Securities are raising the possibility of the new operating system coming out by the end of June. Barron's Tech Trader Daily has details on the Pacific Crest report -- which calls Windows 7 “a dramatic improvement over Vista" and predicts it will have a sizable impact on the broader tech industry.
Meanwhile, Mary Jo Foley got ahold of a Forrester Research report and came away with this nugget: 71 percent of business PCs are still running Windows XP. That confirms the notion that many of them are planning to go directly to Windows 7, avoiding Windows Vista in the process.
"IT decision-makers don’t have an entirely rosy outlook for Windows Vista," the Forrester researchers write. "We found that 15% plan on skipping Windows Vista entirely and going straight to Windows 7 soon after its release in 2010. And another 22% still have no definitive plans for deploying Windows Vista, and 6% simply don’t know yet what their plans are."
So how quickly will Windows 7 get here? Microsoft hasn't given an official release date, but it's getting all the pieces in place. The company today announced a new "Ecosystem Readiness Program" meant to help hardware and software vendors make their products compatible with it. The company is hoping to avoid the widespread glitches that accompanied the Windows Vista release.
