Amazon.com's grocery delivery service, Amazon Fresh, is expanding its geographic reach again. The service has set up another online vote, pitting four zip codes against each other to become the next delivery zone. The contenders this time are 98053 (Redmond), 98034 (Kirkland), 98056 (Renton), and 98105 (Laurelhurst).
Voting ends March 18. Amazon has used this kind of online vote before to drum up interest in its grocery delivery business. In January, Amazon Fresh set up a vote between four Seattle neighborhoods. Ravenna won that contest, but Amazon eventually extended grocery delivery to all the neighborhoods in the contest, including Ballard, Crown Hill and Magnolia. So the new vote likely gives a good sense of what areas Amazon is targeting generally.
Amazon -- which was an investor in HomeGrocer.com (later Webvan) and Kozmo, two dot-com era grocery delivery services that eventually went out of business -- has taken a cautious approach to building Amazon Fresh, currently limited to parts of the Puget Sound region. But with these online votes, the company appears to be ramping up expansion.
