Amazon.com has been dabbling with mobile devices recently, releasing two applications for Apple's popular iPhone (an Amazon.com shopping app and one for Kindle electronic books). Now the online retail giant is preparing to make further moves in the mobile arena. In a job posting today for a mobile software engineer, Amazon says "we have exciting plans that started with our just released iPhone shopping application and will only get more complex" and will be "developing new native mobile device applications."
Amazon has already signalled that its new Kindle 2 electronic reader synch with a range of mobile devices, though so far it's only launched one Kindle application for the iPhone.
Here's more from today's job posting:
Mobile eCommerce is one of the fastest growing segments and Amazon is well positioned to take its world class customer experience and deliver it on mobile/wireless devices (cell phones such as the iPhone, PDAs, etc.). The Amazon.com Mobile Business team is leading this initiative and will be building new and innovative ways for customers to shop with Amazon via their mobile device. We are looking to not only deliver a terrific experience on today’s wireless devices but also as wireless networks become faster and as the devices continue to become more sophisticated, we will look to take advantage of some of the more unique features of these devices/networks to build a world class experience for our customers around the world.
What do you think? What mobile devices will Amazon target next?
