Amazon.com has been ramping up development of its streaming video business lately. Now speculation is growing that the company is about to roll out high-definition TV shows, with prices designed to compete with Apple's iTunes store.
NewTeeVee said it unearthed details which show Amazon plans to offer HD TV episodes for $2.99 a piece. That's the same price as HD shows on iTunes. I did some rooting around in the Amazon Video on Demand store, and didn't find videos marked HD, but strangely, the "Your Recent History" portion of the website showed the TV episodes I looked at, with some of the marked "[HD]."
Asked about the reports, Amazon spokeswoman Cinthia Portugal responded via email, "We said many months ago that we intend to bring HD titles to our catalogue in 2009 but we have no further details to announce at this time."
Amazon's announcement comes just days after Apple launched high-definition movies for rent and purchase on iTunes.
