Rumors are swirling today that Apple is working on a new device with a large touch screen. The company isn't talking, but speculation falls into two camps: it's either a netbook or an iPod touch-like gadget with a larger screen size. That second scenario could be a threat to Amazon's Kindle reader, which has established an early lead in the growing electronic book market.
The Wall Street Journal reports Apple is rumored to be "developing a device with a touch screen that could be as big as 10 inches, for release in the second half of the year." The newspaper said it could be a netbook, or "be more like an iPod Touch with a bigger screen that will make it easier to watch movies, play videogames, read electronic books and surf the Internet."
If Apple gets into electronic books, it could set up an interesting dynamic with Amazon. Amazon recently unveiled a Kindle application for the iPhone and iPod touch, aiming to extend its electronic book content to Apple's popular mobile devices. If Apple itself tries to carve off a piece of the e-book market, will the two companies' budding relationship be cut short?
