BigOven has introduced a new logo and a new set of online tools to help people more easily find recipes and get basic cooking questions answered. The features come at a time of amazing growth. The tiny startup is now tallying about four million monthly visitors, a 500 percent year-over-year increase, said founder Steve Murch.
I've got one theory for the growth rate: the rotten economy.
Murch -- whose Leftover Wizard feature spits out new ways to use items form your fridge -- agrees.
"While it is impossible to quantify with certainty, it's a pretty safe bet that BigOven.com has certainly benefited from peoples' increased interest in cooking at home," he says.
We've covered the phenomenon before. In an interview last fall, AllRecipes.com President Lisa Sharples noted the 200 percent -year-over-year growth in page views at the cooking site.
"A lot of people decide to eat more at home with an economy in the shape that it is," she said.
Murch, a former Expedia executive who previously founded VacationSpot.com, cited reports showing that Americans dined out less last year. And he said that Borders and Amazon have both seen an increase in sales of cookbooks, in part because he believes Americans are getting more passionate about the food they put in their bodies. The ability to share recipes and cooking ideas easily over the Internet or mobile devices like the iPhone also is having an impact, he said.
With those big cultural changes occurring, BigOven is rolling out the new features in order to help people find what they need quickly. Among the new features are better search results, a new way to add recipes to the comment fields and the ability for non-members to post questions and comment.
The move to more home-cooked meals could be good news for online recipe sites. And that might be good for Seattle, since for some reason a number of home-grown startups were cultivated here.
In addition to AllRecipes and BigOven, the Seattle area boast RecipeZaar (acquired by E.W. Scripps) and Foodista (started by ex-Amazon.com employees.)
