Despite losing an estimated $18 billion last year, Bill Gates has once again regained his status as the richest person in the world with a net worth of $40 billion, according to Forbes annual ranking. The Microsoft co-founder beat out his bridge-playing buddy Warren Buffett who lost $25 billion and slipped to the No. 2 slot.
Forbes found that there are 793 billionaires in the world, down from 1,125 in the previous year. Meanwhile, the collective net worth of those on the list slipped to $2 trillion and the average net worth fell by 23 percent to $3 billion.
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer ranked 29th at $11 billion, just behind Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen finished the year with $10.5 billion, placing him in the 32nd slot. (Correction: The loss of Allen's net worth has been removed due to a calculation error by Forbes.) Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos finished in the 68th spot with a net worth of $6.8 billion. Telecom pioneer and Clearwire founder Craig McCaw took a hit, finishing in 559th place with a net worth of $1.2 billion.
Not everyone lost money in 2008? Oprah Winfrey and Michael Bloomberg actually saw their fortunes rise in this tough economic climate. But several people lost their status as billionaries, including Sanford Weill of Citigroup and Mark Zuckerburg of Facebook.
