Microsoft Hardware gadget makes notebook PCs cool (as in chilly)
Microsoft Hardware this morning announced plans to expand its product line with a $30, USB-powered Notebook Cooling Base that uses a fan and a cooling mechanism to help prevent overheating in notebook computers. The device is set for release in July.
The company says it's the first offering in a "new category of notebook accessories" from the hardware group, best known for its mice and keyboards. No word yet on what the next products in that category will be.
The expansion comes at a time when others are cutting back on their product lineups as a result of the difficult economy, but it looks like Microsoft Hardware sees this as a potential area for growth. The news release announcing the move cites data showing notebooks outselling desktop PCs three to one.
Microsoft's new cooling base is 1.16 inches thick, and the company says it's designed to sit under the notebook on either the user's lap or on a desk. It will be available in white or black.
