Maria Klawe
Looks like Bill Gates will have someone new to talk tech with during breaks in Microsoft's board meetings. Microsoft this afternoon announced the appointment of computer scientist Maria Klawe, president of Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, Calif., to its board of directors. The choice is notable in part because of the low percentage of women in the computer and technology industries.
In the news release announcing her appointment, Klawe calls that underrepresentation "one of the critical issues facing the computing industry,” She adds, “Microsoft has been active and focused in helping to address this challenge, and I’m looking forward to helping the company continue to make progress on this important issue.”
The appointment of Klawe brings Microsoft's board back up to 10 members. The total had dipped following the retirement from the board of Jon Shirley, the former Microsoft president.
In addition, Microsoft declared a quarterly dividend of 13 cents a share, up from 11 cents in the same quarter last year.
