Microsoft is shutting down its adCenter Analytics program, which let online publishers track visitors and other data. The service had been in beta, with many assuming that Microsoft was positioning itself to take on Google Analytics, Omniture and other Web analytics providers. But in a blog post today, the company announced that the beta has been closed.
Bryant Zadegan of AeroXperience has the message that was sent to him and other beta participants. The company says the service will remain usable to current participants through the end of the year.
"You’ve helped us work towards making an informed decision about building a general Web analytics solution, and despite the end of life plan, the beta was very much a success," the adCenter Analytics team said in its blog post. "It enabled us to confidently determine that we can be of most value to advertisers and publishers by offering a tailored solution that meets more specialized needs."
The beta was based on technology Microsoft acquired in its purchase of DeepMetrix, a Web analytics company in Gatineau, Canada.
Zadegan, for one, wonders if this project wasn't about something else all along. "R.I.P, AdCenter Analytics," he writes. "Even though you were likely just a massive data-mining project for Microsoft, you were one of the best tools I’ve ever used."
