Photosynth on iPhone = iSynth |
Follow the ups and downs of a new Seattle startup in a series of behind-the-scenes posts by its founders.
Another project from Microsoft's Live Labs group has been adapted for Apple's iPhone, but this time Microsoft itself isn't responsible. Brown University student Greg Pascale created iSynth (iTunes link), a viewer for Microsoft's Photosynth 3D photo-browsing program.
Pascale was a Photosynth intern last summer, and he explains in the iSynth description that he received permission from Microsoft to develop the free iSynth app. However, he says it's not a Microsoft product and doesn't have technical support from the company.
Photosynth compiles pictures from a scene and rearranges them in three dimensions as they would appear in the real world. I've been playing with iSynth this afternoon, and it's a nice adaptation of the Photosynth experience for the small screen. The menu lets users search for and access a wide variety of "Synths," as they're known, and it surfaces the most popular and most recent for quick access.
Microsoft Live Labs previously released the Seadragon Mobile viewer, showcasing the underlying photo-zooming technology used in Photosynth, but the new iSynth app is meant to capture the full three-dimensional Photosynth experience.
