Bellevue Galleria
Bungie LLC, best known for developing Microsoft's blockbuster "Halo" video-game franchise, is moving from Kirkland to a former movie cineplex in downtown Bellevue, according to a report in today's Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce, citing an anonymous source.
The move to the Bellevue Galleria retail complex is ironic in part because Microsoft and Bungie have tried for years -- without success -- to get a Hollywood studio to make a "Halo" movie. The cineplex was recently converted into office space, according to the story (subscription required) but imagine how cool it would be if Bungie preserved one of the theaters for big-screen "Halo" games.
Bungie announced its spin-off from Microsoft in 2007, after the release of "Halo 3," although the Redmond company has retained an interest in the game developer. Bungie is currently headquartered in the former True Value Hardware store in Kirkland. Between that space and another nearby, the developer currently has 139 employees in Kirkland, the DJC reported, citing city records.
But why a movie theater? The story quotes a Kirkland official saying Bungie "has a preference for high ceilings."
