Sotto Wireless -- the Ignition-backed communications startup led by former executives of McCaw Cellular -- has officially pulled the plug. I had reported on the Bellevue company's troubles last year, noting that most of the staff had been let go as they looked for a buyer.
Now, the Web site is down and the investors (including Ignition and VantagePoint Venture Partners) appear to have lost all of their money. The company raised $8 million
“The board decided that, given the economy, they didn’t make enough traction,” spokeswoman Megan McKenzie tells the Venture Capital Dispatch blog.
Sotto was developing a unified mobile and fixed-line communications system for small and medium-sized businesses, with plans at one time to expand into as many as 100 markets in the U.S. It began service in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2006. The startup was led by Rod Nelson, who previously served as CTO at AT&T Wireless. Steve Hooper, a partner at Ignition and former CEO of AT&T Wireless, sat on the board.
