Are you ready for some HD? Comcast, the state's largest cable company, has started rolling out 31 HD channels in parts of the state with a goal to reach 100 by the end of the year.
The channels include:
Encore HD, Starz Kids & Family HD, Starz Comedy HD, Starz Edge HD, Speed HD, ESPNews HD, WE TV HD, Style HD, E! HD, Bravo HD, Lifetime HD, Travel Channel HD, Fox News Channels HD, Fox Business HD, CNN HD, CNBC HD and Spike HD.
Also on the list are:
TBS in HD, Nick HD, Cartoon Network HD, Disney XD HD, Fuse HD, TV One HD, QVC HD, G4 HD, BIO HD, Planet Green HD, AMC HD, LMN HD, IFC HD and InDemand PPV Events HD
Comcast says that the switch from analog to digital will free up capacity in order to offer higher Internet speeds as well as more channels.
The new channels are launching in parts of Brier, Clearview, Lynnwood, Mill Creek, Mountlake Terrace, Mukilteo, Black Diamond, Covington, Enumclaw, Maple Valley, Pacific, Unincorporated King County, Bonney Lake, Buckley, Carbonado, Eatonville, Graham, Orting, Roy, South Prairie and Wilkeson. Other parts of the state will follow later this year.
UPDATE: Comcast's Shauna Causey says that about 25 to 30 percent of customers in the state already have the expanded HD channels, with the remainder to get them by the end of the year. Customers in parts of Bellevue, Olympia, Gig Harbor, Redmond, Woodinville and other cities already have the channels.
As to why certain pockets get coverage first, Causey said that the company rolls out service "node by node."
"The simple answer on why they are launching community by community is because of the cable architecture. Our nodes aren’t split up based on city limits. It also depends on how much digital bandwidth is available in certain areas of the network," said Causey.
