Retailing powerhouse Best Buy and Seattle angel investor Geoff Entress have invested $1.6 million in Dashwire, a Seattle company that seamlessly integrates information between mobile devices and the Web. That means text messages, photos, contacts and other important pieces of information saved on the phone can be backed up to the Web, potentially eliminating the frustration if the mobile device is lost or stolen.
The service also allows photos from the camera phone to be uploaded to social networking sites such as Facebook, Flickr, Twitter and others -- similar to the concept behind Seattle's Ontela which is designed to make it easy to get photos off the device. Like Seattle's ZipWhip, Dashwire also allows users to send text messages from the Web.
"We are cranking on some really cool things," Dashwire CEO Ford Davidson tells TechFlash. The company, which employs 11 full time and contract staffers, also plans to increase hiring as part of the new round.
Davidson, a former product manager in Microsoft's Windows Mobile group, said he planned to share more details about the new offerings later this year.
As a result of the funding, Entress and Best Buy's Ying Zeng have joined the company's board. According to a filing with the SEC, Dahswire could raise up to $2.2 million in the round.
