Serena Glover
Serena Glover is contemplating her next gig, possibly creating another startup or taking on an executive role at an early-stage company. The Twango co-founder and former head of Nokia's soon-to-close Kirkland office isn't quite sure at this point. But there's one thing that Glover is absolutely certain she doesn't want in her next job: international travel.
After selling the online video and photo sharing service Twango to Nokia in the summer of 2007, Glover spent much of her time on flights between Seattle and Finland where Nokia is based. Glover called it a major "slog" and one that prevented her from spending time with her family, including her six and 11-year-old kids.
She left Nokia last November, in part to "chill" with her family. (Glover declined to comment on the closure of Nokia's Kirkland office or the company's plans here.) But now she's kicking around a few new ideas.
"The key thing for me is that I would rather do something local where I don't have to travel overseas all of the time," she said. "The good news for me is Seattle is a vibrant community, so there are lots and lots of opportunities here and lots of really talented people."
Glover said she's been talking to folks around Seattle, considering advisor, board and investment roles with various companies. And one of the things she loved about Nokia was learning about the mobile industry, one of the key sectors in Seattle's high-tech economy.
"Given that mobile is such an exciting space, I would imagine doing something that is mobile related," she said. And Glover -- who co-founded Twango in 2004 in her basement -- said she's not concerned about starting a company or joining a startup in a down economy.
"I think, personally, it is a great time to start a company, especially if you can bootstrap," said Glover. "If you can find the right idea and you have enough to get started, it is a great time right now because it is not super noisy out there."
We'll be watching to see where Glover lands.
