With the big E3 video-game convention coming up next week, Microsoft today announced that cumulative worldwide sales of the Xbox 360 have passed 30 million since the video-game console's November 2005 launch.
That's well ahead of the PlayStation 3, which launched a year later and was just under 23 million in cumulative sales as of the end of March, according to Sony's financial reports. However, Nintendo's Wii remains the runaway leader, with more than 50 million in cumulative sales, according to Nintendo's latest data.
With the numbers now up-to-date, it's worth taking a step back and pointing out just how much the market has been turned on its head in this console generation. Sony's PlayStation 2 dominated the last generation -- and continues to enjoy healthy sales -- but its successor has been outpaced Microsoft and Nintendo, whose previous consoles came in No. 2 and No. 3 in market share.
Despite Nintendo's big lead, Microsoft says the Xbox 360 has achieved the largest percentage growth in hardware sales thus far in 2009, up 28 percent compared with the same period last year. The company's Xbox Live online service has more than 20 million members.
So which is more likely at this point: The Xbox 360 catching up to the Wii, or the PS3 catching up to the Xbox 360? At this point, at least, both scenarios might be long shots.
