Musicians will be able to leverage the power of Twitter, MySpace and YouTube thanks to new syndication tools from iLike, the Seattle online music discovery startup that already boasts 45 million registered users. As part of the offering being introduced today, iLike also will help musicians create and distribute customized iPhone applications.
iLike will enable more than 300,000 musicians to syndicate music, concert information, videos and blog posts through the iLike dashboard, simplifying the process by which bands and artists publish content to Twitter, YouTube, Ticketmaster and MySpace.
iLike is already one of the largest online music applications on Facebook, Bebo, hi5 and other sites.
In an interview, CEO Ali Partovi declined to offer projections on what the new syndication deals will do for traffic.
But Partovi called the announcement one of the biggest in the company's history, turning the startup into a "one stop shop" for musicians looking to syndicate content across multiple platforms.
Now, if a musician wants to promote an upcoming concert, he or she only need publish the information once through iLike, which in turn disseminates it to the appropriate platforms. For example, if it is a music video, the musician can decide to have that appear in specific areas of the band's YouTube, Facebook and MySpace pages. It also can be integrated with the musician's own Web site.
That reduces work and eliminates the possibility of errors, said Partovi.
"Artists increasingly these days are beset by a dizzying set of options in an increasingly fragmented media landscape and we are solving what we think is a growing problem for any artist," said Partovi. "Whether it is social networks or mobile platforms or so on, we are trying to establish a single point of presence to host the content in one place, and have it publish everywhere."
In addition to the syndication tools, iLike also is rolling out a premium stats package that provides metrics on things like geographic breakdowns of fans or how many people have listened to a song. iLike plans to charge $99 a year for that offering.
iLike also plans to charge a one-time fee for iPhone application development. Final pricing has not yet been set, with iLike initially charging a special one-time $99 rate. Standard rates will take effect May 18.
Artists also will be able to set their own price point on iPhone apps, with a revenue sharing model implemented in those cases.
Last fall, word spread that iLike was looking for a buyer, with RealNetworks and Ticketmaster rumored as potential acquirers. But in an interview with TechFlash, Partovi avoided that question.
"There's been chatter since before we launched, so I don't think it makes sense to focus on the rumors and speculation," he said.
iLike broke even last October and has been cash flow positive ever since. Partovi said they want to be "self sustaining" in order to make it through the "cyclical downturn."
"We have enough cash to support ourselves, even if we were to go back into investment mode. We still have plenty of cash from our past rounds of financing," said Partovi, adding that the company spent the past six months making sure that they could make it through the downturn.
