Amazon's EC2 cloud service disrupted by lightning storm |

Mother Nature is causing some problems for Amazon.com's flagship EC2 cloud-computing service. The online retailer says a lightning storm sparked an outage for some EC2 customers Wednesday evening. Such disruptions are a sensitive issue for Amazon, which is trying to market its cloud services to large corporations which have stringent availability requirements.
Amazon, on its web service dashboard, reported detecting a "loss of connectivity to some instances" at 6:39 pm Pacific Time Wednesday and later said it was due to a lightning storm which caused damage to a "power distribution unit in a single Availability Zone." By 11:10 pm, the company reported that, "Most instances have full recovered." At 1:20 am Thursday, Amazon said the problem had been fully resolved. The company stressed that only "a very small percentage of instances" were affected and it was not a " generalized service issue."
Also Wednesday evening, Amazon reported "elevated error rates" on its Mechanical Turk service "due to a failing back-end component," but said the service is now operating normally.
