Apple heralds design of Seattle iPhone application: Postage |
Follow the ups and downs of a new Seattle startup in a series of behind-the-scenes posts by its founders.
You know you've reached the pinnacle of success when Apple says your app is cool.
So the folks at Seattle's RogueSheep are feeling pretty good after it was handed one of the prestigious Apple Design Awards. RogueSheep was honored for Postage, a $2.99 iPhone application that allows users to create electronic postcards that incorporate personal photos and then send them via email to friends.
"It is incredible. Honestly, it is still sinking in," said RogueSheep co-founder Daniel Guenther. This is the first iPhone app for the company, which was formed five years ago by veterans of Adobe Systems. The company has focused on custom software development over the years, but Guenther said the recent award is "causing us to look at how we spend our time."
Guenther said that they came up with the idea for Postage last year, though it sat on the back burner for a few months until a designer took up the cause. The app was just released last month. So far, more than 1,000 people have purchased it and over 2,500 postcards have been sent.
Guenther said they tried to keep the design simple so that non geeks could use it. The app -- which competes against offerings such as SodaSnap and Postcard -- allows users to select frames and add effects and different fonts to make the postcard stand out.
And what about the ability to send a postcard the old-fashioned way via snail mail?
Guenther said they've thought a lot about that possibility, but it won't be happening anytime soon.
Here are the other apps that received awards: Tweetie; MLB.com At Bat 2009; Topple; and Wooden Labyrinth 3D.
