Clearwire arrives in Hotlanta |
Follow the ups and downs of a new Seattle startup in a series of behind-the-scenes posts by its founders.
Clearwire continues its march to spread broadband wireless service across the country, with the Kirkland company today officially announcing that its service is available in Atlanta. The move is hardly a surprise since several blogs noted that Clearwire had quietly begun offering WiMax service there last month.
But Clearwire today said that Atlanta is now home to the largest "4G WiMax broadband network" in the U.S. with service available to three million people in a service area covering 1,200 square miles.
The Atlanta expansion comes even though Clearwire continues to lose massive amounts of money. (Last quarter, it reported a net loss of $260 million).
Clearwire, which doesn't require a long-term service contract, is available in Atlanta starting at $20 per month for home users and $40 per month for residential users. It also offers a $10 day pass.
It plans to bring the Clear 4G network to Seattle, Chicago, Charlotte, Dallas, Philadelphia and Honolulu later this year, with a goal of reaching 80 markets by the end of 2010. The company already offers its WiMax service in Portland, Baltimore and Las Vegas.
